Understanding Wind Energy Leases
Have you been approached by a wind energy developer? Does it sound like a great opportunity for additional cash flow? What do I need to know before signing any contracts? Have you read and do you understand the lengthy lease completely?
Recently, there has been lots of interest with wind energy contracts. Before people sign any contract, one should know everything involved and how it will affect them. If you have questions about signing a wind energy contract, come to the Bruning Opera House Thursday, Nov. 12th at 7:30 p.m. for a non-biased & educational program with UNL Extension Educator John Hay and a panel discussion with: Randy Pryor, UNL Extension & Saline County Wind Association Officers, Darrel Hajek and Dave Vavra.
This is an opportunity to visit with individuals who have experience working with wind energy. For more information call the Thayer (402-768-7212) or Fillmore (402-759-3712) County Extension Offices.

Additional wind energy information can be found on the UNL Bioenergy Website.

Farmers & Ranchers College
The Farmers & Ranchers College was formed in January, 2000 with the purpose of providing high quality, dynamic, up to date educational workshops for area agricultural producers in south central Nebraska through a collaborative effort between business, industry and higher education leaders. The mission of the Farmers and Ranchers College is to provide high quality continuing education to farmers and ranchers in a rapidly changing global agricultural environment. Furthermore, the Farmers & Ranchers College will provide the tools necessary so that agricultural producers will be able to respond positively to these changes using a profitable decision making process.
     The Farmers & Ranchers College:
     • Works closely with agribusiness and agriculture industry representatives.
     • Works with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Division and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
     • Works with other institutions of higher education.
     • Works with agricultural commodity organizations.
     • Provides interesting, informative and timely topics in a dynamic format.

Extension Help for Harvest Challenges

Corn Ear Rot, Grain Mold Diseases and Grain Drying. The cooler summer temperatures and late season precipitation are exacerbating harvest challenges this year. Diseases in the corn still standing in the fields such as corn ear rot cause even more problems in stored grain and should be handled differently at harvest to prevent further losses. The pathogens that cause these diseases can continue to grow in the bin and may have dramatic impacts on quality, including the possibility of mycotoxin accumulation. View the Market Journal report (*above) or these linked CropWatch stories for information.

The unusually wet fall conditions and slow maturing grains also require many producers to consider options for drying grain. View this Market Journal report for more information and see related news stories on the CropWatch Web site homepage.

Bovine Tuberculosis

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) announced on June 1, 2009 that a cow from a beef herd in Rock County, Nebraska tested positive for bovine tuberculosis (TB). Since the announcement, the NDA and USAF staff has been investigating the source of the infection and taking measures to limit the potential spread of the disease. The test positive herd as well as herds that have direct contact are under quarantine and being tested for TB. For information regarding bovine tuberculosis and current information regarding the outbreak, visit the NDA Website. Additional information is available through eXtension.

UNL Extension helps entrepreneurs and small businesses succeed.

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs through the Nebraska Business Development Center offer opportunities for small businesses.
